THE MEANING AND PURPOSE OF CLOTHING

Clothing (also known as dress, apparel, or wear) are objects worn on the human body. Usually, clothes are made from fabric or textiles, but over time, clothes started to be made from (dead) animal skins and natural materials found in the environment, put together. . Dressing is mostly just for humans and is a feature of all human societies. The amount and type of clothing worn depends on gender, body type, social and geographical factors. Clothing that covers the body, shoes that cover the feet, gloves that cover the hands, hats and headgear. Eyewear and jewelry are not usually considered as clothing, but play an important role in fashion to make costumes.

 Clothing serves many purposes such as: protecting people from the weather, rough surfaces, sharp rocks, plants that cause rashes, and insects by creating a barrier between the skin and the environment. Clothing can insulate and resist cold or hot weather conditions, and it can create a hygienic barrier to keep infectious and toxic materials away from the body. It can protect the foot from injury and discomfort or facilitate movement in different environments. Clothing also helps protect against ultraviolet radiation. It can be used to prevent glare or improve vision in harsh environments, such as brimmed hats. Clothing used for protection from injury in certain jobs and occupations, in sports, and in war. Accompanied by a bag, belt or ring, clothing can provide a way to carry things around without the need for hands.

Clothing also has important social roles. Dressing up is a changeable social norm. It can imply decency. Not having clothes in front of others can cause embarrassment. In many parts of the world, not wearing clothing in public that exposes genitals, breasts, or buttocks may be considered indecent exposure. The covering of the pubic or genital area is the bare minimum most commonly seen among different cultures regardless of climate, implying that social conventions are the basis of custom. Clothing can also be used to express social status, wealth, group identity, and personality traits.
